Artificial intelligence is conquering music – composers in a panic

The interaction of artificial intelligence and musical creativity causes contradictory feelings among modern artists. At the same time, some performers are actively experimenting with the possibilities of generative technologies.

A vivid example of such interaction was demonstrated at Stockholm University of the Arts, where an unusual musical experiment took place. Pianist David Dolan played a piece on the piano. At the same time, a unique computer system created by composer-researcher Oded Ben-Tal from Kingston University analyzed the melody, determining tonality, rhythmic pattern and sound tones. Based on this analysis, the system generated its own musical accompaniment, mimicking human improvisation. The result was an atmospheric performance with ambient elements.

This example of harmonious cooperation between man and machine contrasts with common fears about the confrontation between creators and technology. Such sentiments reflect general fears of automation – the fear that technology will put people out of work, or more accurately, that the owners of these technologies will use them to displace the rest of us. However, several creative professionals, including well-known musicians, are exploring the potential of AI as a tool to enhance creativity, rather than simply as a mimic of existing work.

Artists, text writers, developers – all of them are already being partially replaced by artificial intelligence. But it’s not only about the creative sphere, but also about the tremendous computational capabilities of the “electronic brain”.
